Thank you for smoking, Big Tobacco is glad to have Zyn pouches

Today in Greece, which has the heaviest rate of smoking in the European Union, 55 people will die from smoking. Another 55 will die tomorrow, and, in the next year, smoking will kill 20,000, not including others forced to inhale cancer-causing discharges in taverns and bars, and in public buildings and work offices where it is allegedly forbidden, just like at the European Commission, which wants to ban smoking in public places except for its own buildings.

Today in Europe, 1,726 people will die from smoking, and nearly 630,000 in the next year. In the United States, 1,205 people will die today, and 440,000 in the next year. Worldwide, it is more than five million people annually, a holocaust every year.

Who cares? Because while the US has for years had regulations designed to curtail smoking, and the European Commission and its health ministers want to limit smoking, in neither place is there a call for the only solution – banning cigarettes and tobacco products.

Why? Do the math. According to the BBC, the US tobacco industry is worth more than USD 45 billion annually, much of it going to the federal and state governments in taxes, funding critical programs – including the cost of caring for smokers as they linger in hospitals and hospices to die.

The US tobacco industry provides 50,000 manufacturing jobs and 136,000 farming jobs directly, and generates another 400,000 jobs indirectly, while the US Treasury is estimated to have taken in USD 118 billion in tobacco taxes in the past 10 years, the BBC said, and makes seven times more money from the sale of a pack of cigarette than does the manufacturer.

In Hungary, where, like other Central European countries, smoking is popular and glamourised, nearly 1.19 billion Euro a year is spent on cigarettes. In many countries in Europe, up to 80 percent of the price of a pack of cigarettes goes to the taxman, and the United Kingdom’s tobacco industry generated more than 14.8 billion Euro annually – 10 years ago.

And, as smokers in the US and western Europe increasingly kick the habit, Big Tobacco, running out of another generation of smokers it has killed off – mostly the poor and uneducated – has turned toward developing nations for the next victims. Within 20 years, the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates 85 percent of the smokers will come from the world’s poorer countries.

In the meantime, there’s still plenty of time to kill off Americans and Europeans, especially young women who are picking up more cigarettes all the time. If tobacco and nicotine were food additives killing five million people a year, there would be riots demanding a ban. But tobacco is government-sponsored, subsidised, legalised drug dealing, so there will be no prohibition.

The WHO, just ahead of “World No Tobacco Day,” which is a fantasy right up there with “World Peace Day,” blasted the tobacco industry for “spreading untruths,” (that means lies) about smoking in public places in an attempt to slow down calls for no-smoking regulations. That’s the same industry that said smoking doesn’t cause cancer.

French singer-songwriter Renaud, who had been hooked on cigarettes, received a WHO award for his zealous crusade against tobacco, declaring, “It’s a criminal industry.” Yes, and lucrative too.

A European Parliament report last year found smoke from cigarettes contains more than 4,000 chemicals, including hazardous wastes, 50 cancer-causing chemicals and more than 100 chemical poisons. But if the US and EU could derive more revenues from it they’d recommend people spread it on their cereal for breakfast.

There may be some hope that people and anti-tobacco groups will succeed in doing what government won’t. Cigarette and Zyn pouchesuse is dropping in the US and three years ago Ireland introduced a ban on smoking in public places, followed by Norway, Italy, Malta, Sweden, Scotland, Latvia and Lithuania. Smoking among German schoolchildren has fallen to its lowest level in nearly 30 years.

But the United States and the European Union remain the fourth and fifth largest tobacco producers in the world and the crop brings in more revenue for farmers and governments than any other, and that is more important than all the deaths and all the hospital costs and all the victims.

As Shigeru Omi of the WHO’s Pacific office put it: “We all know that smoking kills.” And that will be the epitaph of the governments who let it happen.

WHO warns the hookah may pose same risk as cigarettes

Water-pipe smoking may pose the same health risks as cigarettes, the World Health Organization said Tuesday, adding that more scientific research was needed into the link between hookah use and a number of fatal illnesses.

“Using a water pipe to smoke tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking,” the U.N. health agency said in a seven-page document on the practice. “Contrary to ancient lore and popular belief, the smoke that emerges from a water pipe contains numerous toxicants known to cause lung cancer, heart disease and other diseases.”

The WHO “advisory note” warned that using water pipes to consume shisha _ a mixture of tobacco, molasses and fruit flavors _ usually exposes a person to more smoke over a longer period of time than do cigarettes. Preliminary research indicates that hookah smoking poses many of the same dangers as cigarettes and may involve “some unique health risks,” the agency said.

A hookah is a bowl connected to a vase of water with a long tube and mouthpiece. The tobacco sits inside the bowl with a layer of foil and a hot coal on top. The shisha is never lit, instead heated by the charcoal, which smokers say produces a vapor different from smoke.

The hookah, used for centuries in North Africa, the Middle East and Central and South Asia, has become increasingly popular in the United States, Europe and Brazil, particularly among college students and young adults.

WHO says the trend is partly due to “unfounded assumptions” of its safety, and misleading commercial marketing.

The agency said a person can inhale more than 100 times more smoke in a hookah session than in a single cigarette. By delivering nicotine, the water pipe can cause addiction.

“None of the accessories have been demonstrated to reduce smokers’ exposure to toxins or risk of tobacco-related disease and death,” WHO said.

While further research is required, the health body said those exposed to secondhand hookah smoke appeared to be at risk of the same diseases as those exposed to cigarettes. WHO warned that hookah smoke could also increase the risk of adverse effects during pregnancy.

MEGA MILLIONS PKV JACKPOT INCREASES TO $106 MILLION

ATLANTA — The jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery drawing grew to $106 million Wednesday.

None of the tickets sold for Tuesday’s $90 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball. The next drawing will be Friday.

There were five second-prize winners from Tuesday night’s drawing, matching all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $175,000 each.

Also, 37 players matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $5,000.

The winning numbers from Tuesday’s drawing were: 11, 20, 26, 28, and 52. The Mega Ball number was 7.

MEGA MILLIONS JACKPOT INCREASES TO $126 MILLION

The PKV jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery drawing grew to $126 million Saturday.

None of the tickets sold for Friday’s $106 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball. The next drawing will be Tuesday.

There were nine second-prize winners — none with tickets bought in Michigan — from Friday night’s drawing, matching all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $175,000 each. Also, 46 players, including one with a ticket sold in Michigan, matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $5,000.

The winning numbers from Friday’s drawing were: 5, 31, 33, 35, and 51. The Mega Ball number was 1.

POWERBALL JACKPOT SOARS TO $145 MILLION!

Eight lottery players across the nation were just one ball shy of winning the country’s largest current lottery jackpot Wednesday night. The ball those players were missing was the Powerball. There were no Powerball jackpot winners Wednesday but 762,687 prizes were paid out across the nation for a total of more than $5.9 million worth of winnings in America’s Game.

Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Wednesday’s drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $145 million.

The cash option for the Saturday, December 4 drawing will be an estimated $79.4 million.

The numbers drawn were: 3, 28, 36, 38, 44 and the Powerball was 1. The Power Play multiplier was 4.

The eight players that correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000 purchased their tickets in Arizona(2), Delaware, Indiana(2), South Carolina(2), and Wisconsin. One additional player from South Carolina not only matched the 5 white numbers, but also purchased the Power Play option for a prize worth $400,000.

Forty-two players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Three additional players not only matched that prize level, but also purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $20,000.

More than 72,000 winning Powerball plays were multiplied by 4 Wednesday. Winners were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot, from 2 to 5 times. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night’s multiplier.

Players purchased more than $31.2 million in tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night.

The lotteries sold more than $2.2 billion in Powerball tickets in FY04. That translates into more than $660 million for worthwhile state projects.

Powerball is now played in 27 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

TEXAS STORE SELLS FIRST WINNING PKV MEGA MILLIONS TICKET

DALLAS — Someone who purchased a Mega Millions lotto ticket at a North Texas store is $101 million richer as the state claimed its first jackpot winner in the multistate game.

One ticket sold in Carrollton matched all the winning numbers from Friday night’s drawing: 8, 10, 17, 24 and 39. The Mega Ball number was 52.

“We’ve been eagerly waiting for this day,” said Reagan Greer, Texas Lottery Commission executive director. “I hope the person or persons holding this winning ticket know what they’ve got.”

At Sack ‘n Save No. 204, five Texas Lottery Commission signs boasted, “We sold a winning Mega Millions ticket here.”

Lottery officials said the store receives a $1 million bonus for selling the grand prize winner in Friday’s game.

Store clerks eagerly awaited news of the new winner.

“He or she bought it out of a new self-serve lotto machine,” an assistant manager told The Dallas Morning News in Sunday’s editions. “That’s all we know at this point.”

It’s the second time the Carrollton store has had a big winner. In March 1994, store clerks sold one of five winning Texas Lotto tickets for a $77 million jackpot.

In Friday’s game, 19 PKV players besides the jackpot winner matched all five numbers — but not the Mega Ball number. Those winners, who included a Balch Springs ticket holder in suburban Dallas, will collect second-place prizes of $175,000 each.

Also, 63 players matched four numbers, plus the Mega Ball number — good for third prizes of $5,000 each.

The grand prize winner had not contacted lottery officials as of Sunday morning.

Because Friday’s Megaplier was four, that multiplies one of the 2nd-tier prizes to $700,000. The Megaplier feature is exclusive to Texas.

A total of 758,680 tickets won prizes ranging from $2 all the way up to the jackpot.

The state joined the Mega Millions multistate lottery in December and numerous lower-tier winners have claimed prizes before the grand prize was announced.

RIVERBOAT CASINO JOBS AND TOGEL HARI INI

The riverboat casinos we’ve contacted run similar to casinos in Nevada and New Jersey in terms of recruitment. They have joblines, updated weekly,

listing current openings, and they maintain human resources or personnel departments. Many casinos, while smaller than some of land-based resort casinos, do employ several hundred people and should be included in your employment search. In fact, the numbers are quite impressive. It’s projected that there are 8,000 riverboat casino jobs generating $175 million in wages in Louisiana alone. For Indiana (the other state in which these figures are available) 4,000 riverboat casino jobs have been created, generating $88 million in wages.

Hiring managers look for the same qualities in their employees as other casinos would—people who demonstrate good customer service skills and work well with the public, and those who have technical skills, such as the ability to deal one or two games. Those riverboats that actually cruise in open water will also need experienced crew.

CASINO DEALER SCHOOLS

For many entering this profession, the route to success will include a stop at the local dealer school. These schools employ instructors who are licensed to

teach gaming procedures to aspiring dealers. Enrollees usually choose one or two games to specialize in, learning the particulars of that game from the instructors and practicing with class members. Most schools offer flexible schedules, with day and evening classes. Admission requirements are also similar, with classes running from approximately four weeks for poker to about twelve weeks for craps. The better schools will have aggressive job placement services and offer tuition assistance or accept financial aid. Costs vary depending on the length of the class and game procedures being taught. Be prepared to spend anywhere from $500 for a short session on blackjack dealing to $2,000 or more for extensive craps training. In Nevada enrollees must be at least 21 years old by the date they are scheduled to graduate from the dealer school. (You must be 21 or older to work in Nevada’s casinos.) These guidelines are similar for New Jersey dealing schools, since you must be 21 or older to work in Atlantic City casinos.

Courses typically cover all aspects of TOGEL HARI INI dealing. Students learn how to handle cards and other game equipment, how to take bets, and specific rules of the game. Most schools create an atmosphere similar to what you would find in a real casino, using authentic tables, chips, and other professional equipment. Some will even simulate high-stress situations with lights, noise, and perhaps the instructor even acting as an overly abrasive player. Upon completion of the class, students should have gained sufficient knowledge and skills to be employed in a casino.

The following is a list of professional dealing schools in or near some of the main gaming areas in the country. This list was verified as accurate at the time it was published; however, occasionally dealer schools will change names, phone numbers, move, or even go out of business due to poor management. For more information on classes provided and their costs, contact the schools listed below directly or look in your local phone book under “schools/vocational training” for ones in your area. You may find additional schools have recently opened as well because of the current expansion of this industry. Remember, casinos do not require that you attend a private dealer school. Hiring managers only need to know that you are capable of dealing in a professional manner.

JACK WHITTAKER

“We’re pretty sure they knew he was dead. That’s why they went inside and took the stuff.”

Chief Deputy John Dailey

Three men burglarized the home of Jack Whittaker, winner of the biggest lottery jackpot in U.S. history, as an acquaintance of Whittaker lay dead inside, police said Tuesday.

Jack Whittaker was not home at the time, and Chief Deputy John Dailey said the death of Jesse Joe Tribble, 18, was not related to the burglary and was not a homicide. It may have been drug-related, Dailey said.

“We’re pretty sure they knew he was dead. That’s why they went inside and took the stuff,” Dailey said to Ingatbola88.

Dailey said one of the three suspects had permission to be in Whittaker’s home. “We don’t know who let them in, but they didn’t break in.”

The break-in took place Thursday night or Friday morning. One of those arrested reported Tribble’s death late Friday morning, Dailey said. Tribble was a friend of Whittaker’s granddaughter, and all three suspects were acquainted with Tribble.

Dailey would not say how the three knew about Tribble’s death.

J.C. Shaver, 20, James Travis Willis, 25, and Jeffrey Dustin Campbell, 20, were charged with larceny and other offenses after being captured on a security camera that Whittaker recently had installed, authorities said.

Police recovered $15,000 worth of items taken from the home, Daily said. He did not give a total for everything stolen.

Whittaker won the largest single jackpot in the nation’s history when he hit a $314.9 million Powerball jackpot on Christmas Day 2002. He chose to accept a lump sum of about $113 million after taxes.

Since then, Whittaker’s vehicle, business and home have been broken into repeatedly. Last year, a strip club manager and his girlfriend were charged with drugging Whittaker and stealing a briefcase containing more than $500,000 in cash and cashier’s checks. The money was recovered.

Last March, within three days, his business was broken into and $2,000 was taken, and his vehicle, parked at his home, was broken into and property was stolen. Earlier in that week, Whittaker was sued by an employee of the Tri-State Racetrack & Gaming Center who alleged he assaulted her in March 2003.

Last year, he was also charged with threatening to kill the manager of a bar and with drunken driving.

WINNER OF NATION’S BIGGEST LOTTERY JACKPOT MORE SINNER THAN SAINT

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The world’s first glimpse of Jack Whittaker, winner of the richest undivided lottery jackpot in U.S. history, was of a boisterous, happy-go-lucky guy in a big cowboy hat who loved his family, work and God and promised to share his good fortune with the church and the poor. Two years later, the picture the public is seeing now is a mug shot of a haggard, somber Whittaker.

Whittaker, 57, has been arrested twice for drunken driving in the past year and has been ordered to go into rehab by Jan. 2 for a 28-day stay. On Monday, he pleaded no contest to charges he attacked a bar manager, and he is accused in two lawsuits of making trouble at a nightclub and a racetrack. ‘‘That’s probably the unfortunate situation of maybe having too much money, too much time on his hands,’’ said Steve Zubrzycki, who works for a company that started selling ‘‘Where’s Jack?’’ T-shirts after authorities issued an arrest warrant for Whittaker earlier this month.

Although he was already a wealthy contractor, Whittaker became an instant celebrity on Christmas Day 2002 after winning a $314.9 million Powerball jackpot. He took his winnings in a lump sum of $113 million after taxes, and at a news conference in which he came across as a jolly saint, he promised to donate one-tenth to his church and contribute to other causes.

He soon created a charity to help people find jobs, buy food or get an education; he split $7 million among three churches; and he gave money to improve a Little League park and buy playground equipment and coloring books for children. But in August 2003, a briefcase containing $545,000 in cash and cashier’s checks was stolen from Whittaker’s sport utility vehicle while it was parked at a strip club, and police disclosed that Whittaker not only frequented strip clubs but was also a high-stakes gambler — which is why he was carrying so much cash.

The break-in was the first of several thefts involving Whittaker’s vehicle, his office and his house in Scott Depot, a booming bedroom community of about 8,000 situated between Charleston and Huntington, West Virginia’s two biggest cities.

Poker: A Valuable Tool for Teaching Togel Life Skills?

Howard Lederer and Crandall Addington are taking a different approach to the current political poker situation. They recently spoke at Harvard about the situation regarding poker in America. The meetings were organized by the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTS) with the goal of promoting poker as a valuable life-skill teaching tool. The organization will address issues that concern the game, like the trade dispute between the U.S. and Antigua.

The GPSTS has branches popping up at universities all over the country including Stanford, Brown, Tufts, Boston U, UCLA and USC. The group is also looking to establish a separate status for poker online. They feel that poker should be treated as a skill game like chess, and not a game of chance like blackjack or roulette. On November 10 they will examine the “educational utility of poker” featuring poker authors Mike Sexton and Jim McManus.

NASCAR and Online Poker?

NASCAR is the latest company to jump on the poker bandwagon to promote their brand. They have set up a free-to-play poker site that allows NASCAR fans to play against their favorite drivers online. I’m surprised it took this long for poker and NASCAR to unite. Many NASCAR fans are people that love to play poker.

Drivers will be playing poker tournaments and the fans can play against them. Notable drivers participating include Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Tony Stewart, Dale Jarrett, Kasey Kahne, Elliott Sadler and Jamie McMurray. It just goes to show you how popular the game is with race-car drivers.

The name of the site is VLPClub.net and it’s the first of its kind to allow fans to interact with the drivers. A monthly fee can be paid which allows players to play for prizes like autographed NASCAR collectibles, and opportunities to meet their favorite drivers. Gentlemen, start your engines.

Dealing with College When You Really Want to be a Poker Pro

Trying to deal with college when all you want to do is play professional poker is a simple situation for anyone to resolve. It’s the same as a guy that has a job and wants to quit to “go pro”. My opinion on this issue remains the same: Your bankroll will dictate whether you can be a professional or not. If you’re in school and you win a large sum of money in a tournament, then you have the option to take some time off and play fulltime.

If that doesn’t happen, you have to continue to build a life for yourself. Turning pro is done when one can afford to make that leap, not a choice of vocation with no bankroll. If you think you can build a large bankroll grinding in limit games if you had more time, wait for your summer vacation and give it your best shot.

The WPT is running bootcamps through the fall and winter this year, then into the New Year. Players can choose which type of poker setting they would like to learn. Some are for tournament play and others for cash games.

Many big-name players have offered their expertise; here’s who and when:

Play Poker against the Detroit Red Wings

On November 5th, 2007, the Detroit Red Wings are sponsoring the first Hockeytown Hold’em Tournament at Motor City Casino. The NHL team is the latest to use poker as a fun way to raise money for their charity.

The Detroit Red Wings Foundation will be the benefactor for this event, which requires a $500 donation to enter. Team members Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg and others will be playing in the event.

Extreme Poker?

After successful events on the ocean floor, an Arctic chill in Finland and at 15,000 feet in the air above Vegas, the latest in “Extreme Poker” was played on a metal frame that was 90 metres in the air. Six players played a game above the Pacific Ocean with the winner getting into the Extreme Poker Final at St. Kitts in the Caribbean.

The fourth edition of the annual event was played in blustery conditions extended over the cliffs of Manly’s North Head, Australia, which is situated opposite Sydney’s Harbour Bridge. The eventual winner was Hugo Asenjo and he was the only player permitted to walk off of the platform.

Celebrity Togel players like Phil Laak played in previous events but Extreme Poker got its participants from online qualifiers this time. The creator of Extreme Poker, Peter Marcus said, “Sydney will prove the most challenging poker game ever with endurance, ability and nerves all being put to the test.”

Poker Murder Trial Hears of “Burking” and Theft

Scratch marks above Ted Binion’s mouth, a small red lesion in the middle of his chest and bruises on his back prove the wealthy former casino executive was murdered. This was the testimony of a forensic pathologist in the third week of the rerun Las Vegas “Poker Murder Trial”.

Sandy Murphy, a 32-year-old former stripper, and Rick Tabish, a 39-year-old Montana contractor are being retried for killing Ted Binion, the son of legendary casino owner Benny Binion who founded Binion’s Horseshoe, home of the World Series of Poker. Their first convictions were overturned on appeal.

Dr. Michael Baden said that the marks show the millionaire heroin addict was killed by a rare method of suffocation called “burking.”

“Mr. Binion died from traumatic asphyxia, trauma to the body that prevented him from breathing,” Baden said.

Baden told jurors that abrasions on Binion’s lip were probably made while he was struggling against someone covering his mouth. He said two small lesions on Binion’s chest were caused by shirt buttons being pressed into him as someone applied pressure to his chest.

Baden also testified that Binion had haemorrhaging in his eyes, which is common in asphyxia victims.

Binion’s former lawyer, Brown, was not allowed to tell the jury what he had testified to in the first trial, that Binion had told him: “Take Sandy out of the will, if she doesn’t kill me tonight. If I’m dead, you’ll know what happened.”

District Judge Joseph Bonaventure said the testimony could hinder Murphy’s ability to get a fair trial. When the state Supreme Court overturned the convictions in the case, justices expressed concerns about Brown’s statement, saying it essentially allowed Binion to testify from the grave.

Prosecutors believe Murphy and Tabish, a former contractor from Missoula, Mont., forced Binion to ingest lethal levels of heroin and the anti-depressant Xanax and then suffocated him. They say the pair were motivated by greed.

Two days after Binion’s death, Tabish was caught digging up a cache of silver buried by Binion in an underground vault. Authorities estimate the silver was worth $7 million.

Defense lawyers say Binion, a heroin addict, died of an accidental overdose.

Prosecutors said that Murphy and Tabish spent the fatal morning killing Binion and then pillaging his home before Murphy’s frantic 911 call at 3:55 p.m. to report that Binion had “stopped breathing.”

Binion’s daughter, Bonnie, told jurors Thursday that her father always carried about $10,000 in cash on him, and kept more cash, rare coins and precious stones in hiding places in his home.

Bonnie said that the morning after her father’s death there was no money in his wallet or pants, his coin collection was missing, and his usual cash-hiding spots were empty. Binion’s housekeeper returned to the stand to testify about a long list of items that were missing, including gold pocket watches and silver coins.

Prosecutors also showed jurors slow-motion replays of three moments on the tape in which Murphy pocketed items.

In one scene, Murphy appeared caught off-guard by her attorney, who entered the kitchen where she was standing near a counter by some wine glasses.

Prosecutors have previously theorized that Murphy had slipped a wine glass into her bag and that the item may have contained evidence related to Binion’s murder.

The defense has stated that Murphy had poured herself a glass of wine and didn’t want to be captured drinking on tape.
